The best Climbing Routes & Via Ferratas in Osttirol

Rock climbing is booming, and the mountains south of the Alpine Main Ridge and the Lienzer Dolomites offer abundant opportunities to indulge your passion for this sport.

Just like the famous Dolomites in South Tirol, the rugged and impressive Lienzer Dolomites, a mountain range that belongs to the Gailtal Alps, are a paradise for mountaineers and rock climbers.

Many famous alpinists have tested their skills in Osttirol’s mountains before moving on to greater heights and many still come here for training purposes. The climbing areas outside Lienz have also served as locations for several movies

In order to meet this increased interest in nature adventures and climbing, Alpinforum Lienz has built some excellent new Via Ferratas and renovated old ones. A Via Ferrata (or “Klettersteig” in German) is a vertical pathway that features permanently fixed cables for safety and metal rung ladders to ease movement. Offering remarkable views and a vertical glimpse of the mountains, a Via Ferrata is a great way to get people into high and wild places that normally would be accessible only to technical climbers. Some popular Via Ferratas include the Laserz Klettersteig, the Madonnen-Klettersteig, the Galitzenklamm Klettersteig, and the Drauradweg Klettersteig.

Via Ferratas offer unique outdoor adventures for people with a wide range of climbing abilities and add fun to your holidays!

One of Osttirol’s most spectacular Via Ferrata is located in the Hohe Tauern and takes you from Kals to the top of Blauspitze, which affords superb views of the surrounding peaks.

Beginners can try their first – supervised – moves in one of the high rope courses such as the “Treepark” in Bergstatt at Lake Tristachersee.

Kids love to climb and scramble! In Osttirol, children can learn basic climbing skills supervised by professional climbing instructors.
